United Bancorp (NASDAQ:UBCP) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
United Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:UBCP) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 20th of December to $0.16. This will take the annual payment to 5.2% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.
Our analysis indicates that UBCP is potentially undervalued!
United Bancorp's Earnings Will Easily Cover The Distributions
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable.
Having distributed dividends for at least 10 years, United Bancorp has a long history of paying out a part of its earnings to shareholders. Based on United Bancorp's last earnings report, the payout ratio is at a decent 40%, meaning that the company is able to pay out its dividend with a bit of room to spare.
Over the next 3 years, EPS is forecast to expand by 26.2%. Analysts estimate the future payout ratio will be 35% over the same time period, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was $0.56, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $0.78. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 3.4% per annum over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. United Bancorp has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 14% per annum. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.
We Really Like United Bancorp's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
