If EPS Growth Is Important To You, 1st Source (NASDAQ:SRCE) Presents An Opportunity
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like 1st Source (NASDAQ:SRCE). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.
Check out the opportunities and risks within the US Banks industry.
1st Source's Earnings Per Share Are Growing
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Over the last three years, 1st Source has grown EPS by 12% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of 1st Source's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers used in this article might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note 1st Source achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 5.4% to US$339m. That's progress.

Are 1st Source Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. Because often, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.
It's good to see 1st Source insiders walking the walk, by spending US$205k on shares in just twelve months. This, combined with the lack of sales from insiders, should be a great signal for shareholders in what's to come. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Daniel Fitzpatrick for US$94k worth of shares, at about US$47.14 per share.
Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for 1st Source is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$402m. This totals to 32% of shares in the company. Enough to lead management's decision making process down a path that brings the most benefit to shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.
While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the big picture. That's because on our analysis the CEO, Chris Murphy, is paid less than the median for similar sized companies. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like 1st Source with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b is about US$5.5m.
The CEO of 1st Source only received US$2.0m in total compensation for the year ending December 2021. That's clearly well below average, so at a glance that arrangement seems generous to shareholders and points to a modest remuneration culture. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Does 1st Source Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, 1st Source is a growing business, which is encouraging. In addition, insiders have been busy adding to their sizeable holdings in the company. That should do plenty in prompting budding investors to undertake a bit more research - or even adding the company to their watchlists. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 1 warning sign for 1st Source you should be aware of.
