With EPS Growth And More, Lakeland Bancorp (NASDAQ:LBAI) Is Interesting
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Lakeland Bancorp (NASDAQ:LBAI). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Lakeland Bancorp Growing?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Over the last three years, Lakeland Bancorp has grown EPS by 12% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of Lakeland Bancorp's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. Lakeland Bancorp maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 31% to US$265m. That's progress.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. To that end, right now and today, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for future Lakeland Bancorp EPS 100% free.
Are Lakeland Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
Any way you look at it Lakeland Bancorp shareholders can gain quiet confidence from the fact that insiders shelled out US$311k to buy stock, over the last year. When you contrast that with the complete lack of sales, it's easy for shareholders to brim with joyful expectancy. It is also worth noting that it was Executive VP & Chief Information Officer Sing Loy Ho who made the biggest single purchase, worth US$50k, paying US$16.53 per share.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Lakeland Bancorp bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. To be specific, they have US$41m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 4.0% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Does Lakeland Bancorp Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, Lakeland Bancorp is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Better yet, insiders are significant shareholders, and have been buying more shares. That makes the company a prime candidate for my watchlist - and arguably a research priority. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Lakeland Bancorp by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
As a growth investor I do like to see insider buying. But Lakeland Bancorp isn't the only one. You can see a a free list of them here.
