Investar Holding Corporation's (NASDAQ:ISTR) dividend will be increasing to US$0.09 on 29th of July. This takes the annual payment to 1.5% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Investar Holding's Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions

It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Before making this announcement, Investar Holding was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 130.2%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 15% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Investar Holding Is Still Building Its Track Record

Investar Holding's dividend has been pretty stable for a little while now, but we will continue to be cautious until it has been demonstrated for a few more years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from US$0.027 to US$0.36. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 38% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, Investar Holding has only grown its earnings per share at 2.5% per annum over the past five years. While EPS growth is quite low, Investar Holding has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.

Our Thoughts On Investar Holding's Dividend

Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
