Here's Why I Think Farmers National Banc (NASDAQ:FMNB) Is An Interesting Stock

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Farmers National Banc (NASDAQ:FMNB). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Farmers National Banc's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, Farmers National Banc has grown EPS by 25% per year, compound, in the last three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of Farmers National Banc's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note Farmers National Banc's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 20% to US$142m. That's progress.

Are Farmers National Banc Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

Despite -US$21k worth of sales, Farmers National Banc insiders have overwhelmingly been buying the stock, spending US$712k on purchases in the last twelve months. On balance, to me, this signals their optimism. It is also worth noting that it was Independent Director Edward Muransky who made the biggest single purchase, worth US$154k, paying US$15.40 per share.

On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Farmers National Banc insiders have a valuable investment in the business. To be specific, they have US$49m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 9.2% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

While insiders already own a significant amount of shares, and they have been buying more, the good news for ordinary shareholders does not stop there. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Kevin Helmick is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. For companies with market capitalizations between US$200m and US$800m, like Farmers National Banc, the median CEO pay is around US$1.7m.

Farmers National Banc offered total compensation worth US$1.1m to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Does Farmers National Banc Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, Farmers National Banc's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. So it's fair to say I think this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Farmers National Banc is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
