Some Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ:LI) Analysts Just Made A Major Cut To Next Year's Estimates
Today is shaping up negative for Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ:LI) shareholders, with the analysts delivering a substantial negative revision to this year's forecasts. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with the analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.
After this downgrade, Li Auto's 31 analysts are now forecasting revenues of CN¥48b in 2022. This would be a substantial 31% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Per-share losses are expected to explode, reaching CN¥0.93 per share. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of CN¥54b and CN¥0.64 per share in losses. Ergo, there's been a clear change in sentiment, with the analysts administering a notable cut to this year's revenue estimates, while at the same time increasing their loss per share forecasts.

There was no major change to the consensus price target of US$44.44, signalling that the business is performing roughly in line with expectations, despite lower earnings per share forecasts. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Li Auto at US$62.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$28.00. This is a fairly broad spread of estimates, suggesting that the analysts are forecasting a wide range of possible outcomes for the business.
Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. We would highlight that Li Auto's revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 72% annualised growth rate until the end of 2022 being well below the historical 94% p.a. growth over the last three years. By way of comparison, the other companies in this industry with analyst coverage are forecast to grow their revenue at 22% annually. Even after the forecast slowdown in growth, it seems obvious that Li Auto is also expected to grow faster than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Li Auto. While analysts did downgrade their revenue estimates, these forecasts still imply revenues will perform better than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on Li Auto after the downgrade.
With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Li Auto going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
