Fullerton Technology's (TWSE:6136) three-year earnings growth trails the 19% YoY shareholder returns
By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, Fullerton Technology Co., Ltd. (TWSE:6136) shareholders have seen the share price rise 41% over three years, well in excess of the market return (28%, not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 19%, including dividends.
Since the stock has added NT$364m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During three years of share price growth, Fullerton Technology achieved compound earnings per share growth of 4.5% per year. In comparison, the 12% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This indicates that the market is feeling more optimistic on the stock, after the last few years of progress. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Fullerton Technology's TSR for the last 3 years was 69%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Fullerton Technology shareholders are up 19% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 13% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
