Creative Sensor Inc. (TWSE:8249) Stock Catapults 28% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Market
Creative Sensor Inc. (TWSE:8249) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 5.1% isn't as impressive.
Even after such a large jump in price, Creative Sensor's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 17.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Taiwan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 21x and even P/E's above 38x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Creative Sensor over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Creative Sensor's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 28%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 68% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 24% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we can see why Creative Sensor is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Creative Sensor's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Creative Sensor revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
Having said that, be aware Creative Sensor is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
