IEI Integration Corp.'s (TWSE:3022) Earnings Are Not Doing Enough For Some Investors
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.5x IEI Integration Corp. (TWSE:3022) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Taiwan have P/E ratios greater than 22x and even P/E's higher than 40x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at IEI Integration over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For IEI Integration?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, IEI Integration would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 22%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 24% overall rise in EPS. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 25% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's understandable that IEI Integration's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
What We Can Learn From IEI Integration's P/E?
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of IEI Integration revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with IEI Integration, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
