Leadtek Research Inc. (TWSE:2465) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 16% in the last month. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In that time, the share price has soared some 651% higher! Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

Leadtek Research wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

For the last half decade, Leadtek Research can boast revenue growth at a rate of 3.4% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering the bottom line. Therefore, we're a little surprised to see the share price gain has been so strong, at 50% per year, compound, over the period. We don't think the growth over the period is that great, but it could be that faster growth appears to some to be on the horizon. It's not immediately obvious to us why the market has been so enthusiastic about the stock, but a more detailed look at revenue and profit trends might reveal why shareholders are optimistic.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Leadtek Research's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Leadtek Research's TSR of 671% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Leadtek Research shareholders have received returns of 39% over twelve months, which isn't far from the general market return. We should note here that the five-year TSR is more impressive, at 50% per year. More recently, the share price growth has slowed. But it has to be said the overall picture is one of good long term and short term performance. Arguably that makes Leadtek Research a stock worth watching. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Leadtek Research (at least 3 which are significant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
