Shareholders Of PCL Technologies (TPE:4977) Must Be Happy With Their 188% Total Return
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance, the price of PCL Technologies, Inc. (TPE:4977) stock is up an impressive 129% over the last five years. It's also up 20% in about a month. But this could be related to good market conditions -- stocks in its market are up 10% in the last month.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, PCL Technologies achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 9.1% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 18% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of PCL Technologies, it has a TSR of 188% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
PCL Technologies' TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 25%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 24% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that PCL Technologies is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is potentially serious...
