Leadtrend Technology Corporation (TWSE:3588) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 40% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Leadtrend Technology's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Semiconductor industry in Taiwan, where the median P/S ratio is around 3.8x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Leadtrend Technology's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Leadtrend Technology has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this respectable revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Leadtrend Technology will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Leadtrend Technology?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Leadtrend Technology would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 25% gain to the company's top line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 22% drop in revenue in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 26% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Leadtrend Technology's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Leadtrend Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

Leadtrend Technology appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our look at Leadtrend Technology revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
