When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that Kindom Development Co., Ltd. (TWSE:2520) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt A Problem?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. How Healthy Is Kindom Development's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Kindom Development had liabilities of NT$28.3b due within 12 months, and liabilities of NT$5.97b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of NT$15.0b and NT$4.12b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by NT$15.1b.
This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of NT$24.4b. This suggests shareholders would be heavily diluted if the company needed to shore up its balance sheet in a hurry.

So you could argue it is no more threatened by its debt than an elephant is by a mouse. But the other side of the story is that Kindom Development saw its EBIT decline by 2.4% over the last year. That sort of strong cash generation warms our hearts like a puppy in a bumblebee suit.
Our View
Kindom Development's interest cover suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. But truth be told we feel its level of total liabilities does undermine this impression a bit. All these things considered, it appears that Kindom Development can comfortably handle its current debt levels. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
