SciVision Biotech (TPE:1786) Shareholders Booked A 80% Gain In The Last Three Years
It hasn't been the best quarter for SciVision Biotech Inc. (TPE:1786) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 17% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been pleasing. To wit, the share price did better than an index fund, climbing 80% during that period.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
SciVision Biotech was able to grow its EPS at 77% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is higher than the 22% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for SciVision Biotech the TSR over the last 3 years was 88%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Investors in SciVision Biotech had a tough year, with a total loss of 9.4% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.0% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
