The board of China Wire & Cable Co., Ltd. (TWSE:1603) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of NT$1.30 on the 20th of September, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 3.0%.

China Wire & Cable's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, China Wire & Cable's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 33.5% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 30%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

China Wire & Cable's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

China Wire & Cable has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. Since 2016, the dividend has gone from NT$0.714 total annually to NT$1.30. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 7.8% per annum over that time. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. China Wire & Cable has impressed us by growing EPS at 33% per year over the past five years. China Wire & Cable is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
