Venture Corporation Limited (SGX:V03) has announced that it will pay a dividend of S$0.25 per share on the 17th of September. This means that the annual payment will be 3.9% of the current stock price, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Venture's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. The last payment made up 71% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 12.4%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 68%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2011, the dividend has gone from S$0.55 to S$0.75. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.2% a year over that time. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see Venture has been growing its earnings per share at 12% a year over the past five years. Past earnings growth has been decent, but unless this is one of those rare businesses that can grow without additional capital investment or marketing spend, we'd generally expect the higher payout ratio to limit its future growth prospects.
We Really Like Venture's Dividend
Overall, we like to see the dividend staying consistent, and we think Venture might even raise payments in the future. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
