Procurri's (SGX:BVQ) Returns On Capital Not Reflecting Well On The Business
Ignoring the stock price of a company, what are the underlying trends that tell us a business is past the growth phase? Typically, we'll see the trend of both return on capital employed (ROCE) declining and this usually coincides with a decreasing amount of capital employed. Basically the company is earning less on its investments and it is also reducing its total assets. And from a first read, things don't look too good at Procurri (SGX:BVQ), so let's see why.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Procurri is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.01 = S$641k ÷ (S$136m - S$72m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
So, Procurri has an ROCE of 1.0%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electronic industry average of 11%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Procurri Tell Us?
We are a bit worried about the trend of returns on capital at Procurri. About five years ago, returns on capital were 8.9%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. And on the capital employed front, the business is utilizing roughly the same amount of capital as it was back then. Companies that exhibit these attributes tend to not be shrinking, but they can be mature and facing pressure on their margins from competition. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Procurri to turn into a multi-bagger.
On a side note, Procurri's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 53% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 1.0%. What this means is that in reality, a rather large portion of the business is being funded by the likes of the company's suppliers or short-term creditors, which can bring some risks of its own.
The Bottom Line
In summary, it's unfortunate that Procurri is generating lower returns from the same amount of capital.
