The board of Synsam AB (publ) (STO:SYNSAM) has announced that it will pay a dividend of SEK1.80 per share on the 6th of May. This payment means that the dividend yield will be 3.9%, which is around the industry average.

Synsam's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. The last payment made up 73% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 106.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 35% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Synsam Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend hasn't seen any major cuts in the past, but the company has only been paying a dividend for 3 years, which isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. The annual payment during the last 3 years was SEK1.70 in 2022, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SEK1.80. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 1.9% per annum over that time. We like that the dividend hasn't been shrinking. However we're conscious that the company hasn't got an overly long track record of dividend payments yet, which makes us wary of relying on its dividend income.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see that Synsam has been growing its earnings per share at 59% a year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing nicely, but the company is paying out most of its earnings as dividends. This might be sustainable, but we wonder why Synsam is not retaining those earnings to reinvest in growth.

Synsam Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, we like to see the dividend staying consistent, and we think Synsam might even raise payments in the future. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Synsam that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
