We Think Bonesupport Holding (STO:BONEX) Can Easily Afford To Drive Business Growth

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Bonesupport Holding (STO:BONEX) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

When Might Bonesupport Holding Run Out Of Money?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Bonesupport Holding last reported its balance sheet in December 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth kr206m. Importantly, its cash burn was kr87m over the trailing twelve months. Therefore, from December 2021 it had 2.4 years of cash runway. Notably, however, analysts think that Bonesupport Holding will break even (at a free cash flow level) before then. If that happens, then the length of its cash runway, today, would become a moot point. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Well Is Bonesupport Holding Growing?

On balance, we think it's mildly positive that Bonesupport Holding trimmed its cash burn by 16% over the last twelve months. And operating revenue was up by 18% too. On balance, we'd say the company is improving over time. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can Bonesupport Holding Raise More Cash Easily?

Even though it seems like Bonesupport Holding is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.

Bonesupport Holding's cash burn of kr87m is about 3.1% of its kr2.8b market capitalisation. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.

Is Bonesupport Holding's Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Bonesupport Holding's cash burn. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. Its weak point is its cash burn reduction, but even that wasn't too bad! Shareholders can take heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be.
