Some Confidence Is Lacking In Stillfront Group AB (publ) (STO:SF) As Shares Slide 26%

The Stillfront Group AB (publ) (STO:SF) share price has softened a substantial 26% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 40% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Stillfront Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Entertainment industry in Sweden, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.7x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Stillfront Group Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Stillfront Group's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

How Is Stillfront Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

Stillfront Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 10% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 1.7% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 7.3% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 9.8% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Stillfront Group's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Stillfront Group's P/S

Following Stillfront Group's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

While Stillfront Group's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.
