Revenues Not Telling The Story For Stillfront Group AB (publ) (STO:SF) After Shares Rise 29%
Stillfront Group AB (publ) (STO:SF) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 31% over that time.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Stillfront Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Sweden's Entertainment industry is similar at about 0.7x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Stillfront Group Has Been Performing
Stillfront Group's negative revenue growth of late has neither been better nor worse than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to continue matching the industry, which has kept the P/S in line with expectations. If you still like the company, you'd want its revenue trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. At the very least, you'd be hoping that revenue doesn't accelerate downwards if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's not in favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Stillfront Group's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.3%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 32% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 3.7% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 4.6% growth per annum, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we find it concerning that Stillfront Group is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Stillfront Group appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
While Stillfront Group's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If we consider the revenue outlook, the P/S seems to indicate that potential investors may be paying a premium for the stock.
