Here's Why We Think Evolution (STO:EVO) Is Well Worth Watching

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Evolution (STO:EVO). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Evolution with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Evolution's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Evolution has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. To the delight of shareholders, Evolution's EPS soared from €2.47 to €3.71, over the last year. That's a impressive gain of 50%.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Evolution shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 59% to 62%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Evolution Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of Evolution, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth €4.6b. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

Is Evolution Worth Keeping An Eye On?

You can't deny that Evolution has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. With EPS growth rates like that, it's hardly surprising to see company higher-ups place confidence in the company through continuing to hold a significant investment. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Evolution is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
