Metacon AB (publ)'s (STO:META) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 28% Slump
The Metacon AB (publ) (STO:META) share price has softened a substantial 28% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Of course, over the longer-term many would still wish they owned shares as the stock's price has soared 185% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, when almost half of the companies in Sweden's Electrical industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.1x, you may still consider Metacon as a stock probably not worth researching with its 3.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Metacon's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times have been advantageous for Metacon as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Metacon's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company's revenues underwent some rampant growth over the last 12 months. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 163% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of explosive growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 83% per annum during the coming three years according to the only analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 18% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why Metacon is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Metacon's P/S?
There's still some elevation in Metacon's P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Metacon's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
