Atlas Copco (STO:ATCO A) Is Aiming To Keep Up Its Impressive Returns
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. That's why when we briefly looked at Atlas Copco's (STO:ATCO A) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Atlas Copco:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.27 = kr39b ÷ (kr199b - kr56b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, Atlas Copco has an ROCE of 27%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Machinery industry average of 15%.

Now considering ROCE is an attractive 27%, this combination is actually pretty appealing because it means the business can consistently put money to work and generate these high returns. You'll see this when looking at well operated businesses or favorable business models.
The Bottom Line On Atlas Copco's ROCE
In summary, we're delighted to see that Atlas Copco has been compounding returns by reinvesting at consistently high rates of return, as these are common traits of a multi-bagger. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 205% return they've received over the last five years.
