David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Clean Motion AB (publ) (STO:CLEMO) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Clean Motion's Debt?
As you can see below, Clean Motion had kr19.6m of debt, at September 2020, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. Net debt is about the same, since the it doesn't have much cash.
How Strong Is Clean Motion's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Clean Motion had liabilities of kr11.1m due within 12 months, and liabilities of kr19.6m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of kr56.0k and kr289.0k worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling kr30.4m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Given this deficit is actually higher than the company's market capitalization of kr20.7m, we think shareholders really should watch Clean Motion's debt levels, like a parent watching their child ride a bike for the first time. Hypothetically, extremely heavy dilution would be required if the company were forced to pay down its liabilities by raising capital at the current share price. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is Clean Motion's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
In the last year Clean Motion had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 51%, to kr1.5m. To be frank that doesn't bode well.
Caveat Emptor
Not only did Clean Motion's revenue slip over the last twelve months, but it also produced negative earnings before interest and tax (EBIT). Its EBIT loss was a whopping kr12m. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above make us nervous about the company. It would need to improve its operations quickly for us to be interested in it. For example, we would not want to see a repeat of last year's loss of kr21m. And until that time we think this is a risky stock. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Clean Motion (of which 3 are significant!) you should know about.
