When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Take, for example Saudi Cable Company (TADAWUL:2110). Its share price is already up an impressive 105% in the last twelve months. Better yet, the share price has risen 5.9% in the last week. Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

While Saudi Cable made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

Saudi Cable actually shrunk its revenue over the last year, with a reduction of 6.7%. We're a little surprised to see the share price pop 105% in the last year. It just goes to show the market doesn't always pay attention to the reported numbers. It's quite likely the revenue fall was already priced in, anyway.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Saudi Cable shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 105% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 6% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
