Even With A 27% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding S.C. Romnav S.A.'s (BVB:BRNA) Performance Completely

S.C. Romnav S.A. (BVB:BRNA) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.

Although its price has surged higher, S.C. Romnav may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.2x, since almost half of all companies in Romania have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 34x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

For instance, S.C. Romnav's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as S.C. Romnav's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 44% decrease to the company's bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 350% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Weighing the recent medium-term upward earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for contraction of 3.8% shows it's a great look while it lasts.

With this information, we find it very odd that S.C. Romnav is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can maintain its recent positive growth rate in the face of a shrinking broader market.

What We Can Learn From S.C. Romnav's P/E?

Even after such a strong price move, S.C. Romnav's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of S.C. Romnav revealed its growing earnings over the medium-term aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to shrink. We think potential risks might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio and share price. Perhaps there is some hesitation about the company's ability to stay its recent course and swim against the current of the broader market turmoil. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because this relative performance should normally provide a boost to the share price.
