How Much Did Comp's(WSE:CMP) Shareholders Earn From Share Price Movements Over The Last Year?

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. That downside risk was realized by Comp S.A. (WSE:CMP) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 17%. That's disappointing when you consider the market declined 7.2%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 11% in that time. It's down 19% in about a quarter.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unfortunately Comp reported an EPS drop of 3.6% for the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 17% share price fall. Unsurprisingly, given the lack of EPS growth, the market seems to be more cautious about the stock.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Comp shareholders are down 17% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 7.2%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 3% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
