Global Cosmed S.A.'s (WSE:GLC) 27% Jump Shows Its Popularity With Investors
Global Cosmed S.A. (WSE:GLC) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Global Cosmed's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.1x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Poland is similar at about 14x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Global Cosmed as its earnings have been rising very briskly. The P/E is probably moderate because investors think this strong earnings growth might not be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Global Cosmed's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 326% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 0.8% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's understandable that Global Cosmed's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see average growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Global Cosmed's P/E
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Global Cosmed's P/E is also back up to the market median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Global Cosmed maintains its moderate P/E off the back of its recent three-year growth being in line with the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings won't throw up any surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.
