Investors Appear Satisfied With Elmera Group ASA's (OB:ELMRA) Prospects As Shares Rocket 25%
Elmera Group ASA (OB:ELMRA) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 25% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 89% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, Elmera Group may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 54.6x, since almost half of all companies in Norway have P/E ratios under 10x and even P/E's lower than 6x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Elmera Group hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Elmera Group would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 49%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 87% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 287% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 31%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Elmera Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Elmera Group's P/E
Elmera Group's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of Elmera Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
