Tekna Holding ASA (OB:TEKNA) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 31% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Tekna Holding's P/S ratio of 2.2x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Chemicals industry in Norway is also close to 2.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Tekna Holding's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

It looks like revenue growth has deserted Tekna Holding recently, which is not something to boast about. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this benign revenue growth rate might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling hopeful about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Tekna Holding?

Tekna Holding's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Although pleasingly revenue has lifted 53% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some questions to ponder about the last 12 months.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 29% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Tekna Holding's P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Bottom Line On Tekna Holding's P/S

Tekna Holding's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Tekna Holding revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Tekna Holding (of which 2 are a bit concerning!) you should know about.
