Even With A 25% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Prosafe SE's (OB:PRS) Performance Completely
Those holding Prosafe SE (OB:PRS) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 48% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think Prosafe's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Norway's Energy Services industry is similar at about 1.2x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Prosafe's Recent Performance Look Like?
Prosafe could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Prosafe's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 43%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 60% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 72% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 41%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Prosafe is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Bottom Line On Prosafe's P/S
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Prosafe's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Prosafe's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
