BWG (OB:BWLPG) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To $2.5
BW LPG Limited's (OB:BWLPG) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to $2.5 on 9th of December. The payment will take the dividend yield to 6.3%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
Our analysis indicates that BWLPG is potentially undervalued!
BWG Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. The last dividend was quite easily covered by BWG's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 70.9% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach over 200%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.
BWG's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
BWG has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from $0.15 total annually to $0.56. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 18% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. BWG has impressed us by growing EPS at 30% per year over the past five years. BWG is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.
BWG Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. The earnings easily cover the company's distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. However, it is worth noting that the earnings are expected to fall over the next year, which may not change the long term outlook, but could affect the dividend payment in the next 12 months. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
