Here's Why I Think SCGM Bhd (KLSE:SCGM) Is An Interesting Stock

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like SCGM Bhd (KLSE:SCGM). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is SCGM Bhd Increasing Earnings Per Share?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. SCGM Bhd managed to grow EPS by 16% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that SCGM Bhd is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 10.7 percentage points to 16%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are SCGM Bhd Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that SCGM Bhd insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have RM163m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 35% of the company; visible skin in the game.

Should You Add SCGM Bhd To Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, SCGM Bhd is a growing business, which is what I like to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for SCGM Bhd you should know about.
