Sarawak Cable Berhad (KLSE:SCABLE) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 44% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 64%.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies operating in Malaysia's Electrical industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.1x, you may still consider Sarawak Cable Berhad as an attractive investment with its 0.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Sarawak Cable Berhad Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Sarawak Cable Berhad over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

Sarawak Cable Berhad's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 25% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 30% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 11% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we are not surprised that Sarawak Cable Berhad is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Bottom Line On Sarawak Cable Berhad's P/S

Despite Sarawak Cable Berhad's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Sarawak Cable Berhad revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
