Does Sensorview (KOSDAQ:321370) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that Sensorview Co., LTD (KOSDAQ:321370) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Healthy Is Sensorview's Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Sensorview had liabilities of ₩9.05b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩13.9b falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had ₩12.7b in cash and ₩4.04b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₩6.17b.

Of course, Sensorview has a market capitalization of ₩85.1b, so these liabilities are probably manageable. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. But either way, Sensorview has virtually no net debt, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load! When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Sensorview will need earnings to service that debt. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Click here for an interactive snapshot.

In the last year Sensorview wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 36%, to ₩10.0b. With any luck the company will be able to grow its way to profitability.

Caveat Emptor

While we can certainly appreciate Sensorview's revenue growth, its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is not ideal. Its EBIT loss was a whopping ₩19b. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through ₩18b of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Sensorview (2 are potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
