Investors three-year losses continue as Intops (KOSDAQ:049070) dips a further 11% this week, earnings continue to decline
Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But the long term shareholders of Intops Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:049070) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. So they might be feeling emotional about the 57% share price collapse, in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 49% lower in that time. Even worse, it's down 14% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.
Since Intops has shed ₩31b from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Intops saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 33% per year, over the last three years. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 25% compound annual share price fall. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Intops, it has a TSR of -55% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Intops shareholders are down 49% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 8.2%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 11% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Intops (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
