Despite delivering investors losses of 43% over the past 5 years, Comtec SystemsLtd (KRX:031820) has been growing its earnings

Comtec Systems Co.,Ltd. (KRX:031820) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 17% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 51% in that half decade.

The recent uptick of 11% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

While the share price declined over five years, Comtec SystemsLtd actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 50% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Due to the lack of correlation between the EPS growth and the falling share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movement.

In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 32% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Comtec SystemsLtd's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. We note that Comtec SystemsLtd's TSR, at -43% is higher than its share price return of -51%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Comtec SystemsLtd shareholders can take comfort that their trailing twelve month loss of 6.7% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 9.7%. What is more upsetting is the 7% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. While the losses are slowing we doubt many shareholders are happy with the stock. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Comtec SystemsLtd better, we need to consider many other factors.
