Is NHN KCP's (KOSDAQ:060250) 219% Share Price Increase Well Justified?

It hasn't been the best quarter for NHN KCP Corp. (KOSDAQ:060250) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 30% in that time. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. In fact, the share price is 219% higher today. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, NHN KCP achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 27% per year. That makes the EPS growth particularly close to the yearly share price growth of 26%. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, NHN KCP's TSR for the last 5 years was 228%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that NHN KCP shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 81% over one year. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 27%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
