A Closer Look At CYMECHS' Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to December 2023, CYMECHS recorded an accrual ratio of -0.12. Therefore, its statutory earnings were quite a lot less than its free cashflow. In fact, it had free cash flow of ₩27b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of ₩11.0b. Given that CYMECHS had negative free cash flow in the prior corresponding period, the trailing twelve month resul of ₩27b would seem to be a step in the right direction. Having said that, there is more to the story. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Surprisingly, given CYMECHS' accrual ratio implied strong cash conversion, its paper profit was actually boosted by ₩2.5b in unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. CYMECHS had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to December 2023. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.
Our Take On CYMECHS' Profit Performance
CYMECHS' profits got a boost from unusual items, which indicates they might not be sustained and yet its accrual ratio still indicated solid cash conversion, which is promising. Based on these factors, we think it's very unlikely that CYMECHS' statutory profits make it seem much weaker than it is.
