Strong week for JASTECH (KOSDAQ:090470) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of five-year loss
JASTECH, Ltd. (KOSDAQ:090470) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 88% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 22% in that half decade.
On a more encouraging note the company has added ₩23b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.
JASTECH isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
Over half a decade JASTECH reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 16% for each year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. On the face of it we'd posit the share price fall of 4% compound, over five years is well justified by the fundamental deterioration. We doubt many shareholders are delighted with this share price performance. It is possible for businesses to bounce back but as Buffett says, 'turnarounds seldom turn'.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of JASTECH, it has a TSR of -17% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
JASTECH shareholders are up 21% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 3% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand JASTECH better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for JASTECH (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
