There's Reason For Concern Over WIZIT Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:036090) Massive 26% Price Jump
WIZIT Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:036090) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 33% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies operating in Korea's Semiconductor industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.9x, you may consider WIZIT as a stock to potentially avoid with its 3.6x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How WIZIT Has Been Performing
For instance, WIZIT's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, WIZIT would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.5% decrease to the company's top line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 9.6% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 66% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that WIZIT is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On WIZIT's P/S
WIZIT's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Our examination of WIZIT revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
