Caregen Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:214370) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 26% Price Plummet
Caregen Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:214370) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Looking back over the past twelve months the stock has been a solid performer regardless, with a gain of 16%.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Caregen's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 34.3x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 12x and even P/E's below 6x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Caregen's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Caregen's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.1%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 13% overall rise in EPS. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 24% during the coming year according to the one analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 26% growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that Caregen is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Caregen's P/E
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Caregen's very lofty P/E. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Caregen currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
