Investors three-year losses continue as OCI Holdings (KRX:010060) dips a further 7.4% this week, earnings continue to decline
Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term OCI Holdings Company Ltd. (KRX:010060) shareholders, since the share price is down 67% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 16%. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 41% lower in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 17% in the last three months. We note that the company has reported results fairly recently; and the market is hardly delighted. Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
OCI Holdings saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 10% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 31% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 6.21.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, OCI Holdings' TSR for the last 3 years was -43%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that OCI Holdings shareholders are down 39% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 4.9%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 0.3% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand OCI Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with OCI Holdings , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
