It hasn't been the best quarter for Namsun Aluminum Co., Ltd. (KRX:008350) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 15% in that time. But over the last three years the stock has shone bright like a diamond. The longer term view reveals that the share price is up 306% in that period. As long term investors the recent fall doesn't detract all that much from the longer term story. The thing to consider is whether there is still too much elation around the company's prospects.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the three years of share price growth, Namsun Aluminum actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop 21% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Given this situation, it makes sense to look at other metrics too.

The revenue drop of 10% is as underwhelming as some politicians. The only thing that's clear is there is low correlation between Namsun Aluminum's share price and its historic fundamental data. Further research may be required!

A Different Perspective

Namsun Aluminum shareholders gained a total return of 35% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 30% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
