Has HuM&C Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:263920) Impressive Stock Performance Got Anything to Do With Its Fundamentals?
HuM&C's (KOSDAQ:263920) stock is up by a considerable 17% over the past month. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Particularly, we will be paying attention to HuM&C's ROE today.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for HuM&C is:
2.0% = ₩901m ÷ ₩45b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. That means that for every ₩1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated ₩0.02 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
HuM&C's Earnings Growth And 2.0% ROE
As you can see, HuM&C's ROE looks pretty weak. Even compared to the average industry ROE of 6.4%, the company's ROE is quite dismal. However, we we're pleasantly surprised to see that HuM&C grew its net income at a significant rate of 66% in the last five years. We reckon that there could be other factors at play here. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.
As a next step, we compared HuM&C's net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 24%.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if HuM&C is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is HuM&C Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
HuM&C doesn't pay any regular dividends currently which essentially means that it has been reinvesting all of its profits into the business. This definitely contributes to the high earnings growth number that we discussed above.
Summary
Overall, we feel that HuM&C certainly does have some positive factors to consider. With a high rate of reinvestment, albeit at a low ROE, the company has managed to see a considerable growth in its earnings. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company.
