CTK Co., Ltd's (KOSDAQ:260930) 31% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
CTK Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:260930) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 31% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 7.0% isn't as attractive.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think CTK's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Personal Products industry is similar at about 1.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has CTK Performed Recently?
The revenue growth achieved at CTK over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, CTK would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 28% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 28% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 19% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that CTK's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Its shares have lifted substantially and now CTK's P/S is back within range of the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
The fact that CTK currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
