Daesung Private Equity (KOSDAQ:027830) delivers shareholders respectable 7.9% CAGR over 5 years, surging 24% in the last week alone
Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But you can do a lot better than that by buying good quality businesses for attractive prices. For example, the Daesung Private Equity, Inc. (KOSDAQ:027830) share price is up 37% in the last five years, slightly above the market return. Also positive is the 14% share price rise over the last year.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the five years of share price growth, Daesung Private Equity moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Daesung Private Equity share price is down 28% in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 67% per year. It would appear there's a real mismatch between the increasing EPS and the share price, which has declined -11% a year for three years.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Daesung Private Equity's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Daesung Private Equity hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 46% exceeds its share price return of 37%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Daesung Private Equity shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 14% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 8% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Daesung Private Equity you should know about.
