We Think Zinus (KRX:013890) Can Stay On Top Of Its Debt

The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, Zinus, Inc (KRX:013890) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Zinus's Debt?

As you can see below, Zinus had ₩179.8b of debt at June 2025, down from ₩220.9b a year prior. But on the other hand it also has ₩187.7b in cash, leading to a ₩7.93b net cash position.

A Look At Zinus' Liabilities

The latest balance sheet data shows that Zinus had liabilities of ₩304.3b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩76.5b falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₩187.7b as well as receivables valued at ₩131.3b due within 12 months. So its liabilities total ₩61.8b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This deficit isn't so bad because Zinus is worth ₩300.8b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. While it does have liabilities worth noting, Zinus also has more cash than debt, so we're pretty confident it can manage its debt safely.

Notably, Zinus made a loss at the EBIT level, last year, but improved that to positive EBIT of ₩84b in the last twelve months. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Zinus's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. While Zinus has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. In the last year, Zinus created free cash flow amounting to 12% of its EBIT, an uninspiring performance. For us, cash conversion that low sparks a little paranoia about is ability to extinguish debt.

Summing Up

While Zinus does have more liabilities than liquid assets, it also has net cash of ₩7.93b. So we are not troubled with Zinus's debt use. Above most other metrics, we think its important to track how fast earnings per share is growing, if at all. If you've also come to that realization, you're in luck, because today you can view this interactive graph of Zinus's earnings per share history for free.
