Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As Orbitech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:046120) Shares Dive 25%
The Orbitech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:046120) share price has softened a substantial 25% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 50%, which is great even in a bull market.
Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Orbitech's P/S ratio of 1.7x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Professional Services industry in Korea is also close to 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Orbitech's Recent Performance Look Like?
For example, consider that Orbitech's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Orbitech's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.6% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 20% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 14% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Orbitech's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Orbitech looks to be in line with the rest of the Professional Services industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our look at Orbitech revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Orbitech (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
